Carman and Dufferin councils are getting closer to the completion of their commercial-industrial tax-sharing agreement.
Dufferin council passed the agreement, which reeve Shawn McCutcheon is similar to the councils’ residential tax-sharing agreement, at their April regular meeting.
“It doesn’t matter where a business or industrial development takes place, there will be some sharing of revenues,” said McCutcheon.
Whether such an agreement exists between the two councils is a question often asked by those interested in locating in the area, McCutcheon said.

“They take that as an indication that the two different levels of government are getting along.”
Carman Dufferin Economic Development Officer Tyler King said such deals are common among municipal governments.
“A lot of other areas already have commercial-industrial tax-sharing agreements so it’s a natural step for us to take, especially with our residential tax-sharing agreement,” King said.
Carman mayor Bob Mitchell said the agreement has been discussed by town council and is at the committee level.
“I think it’s pretty well done, it’s more just little bits of technical wording on it to make sure it’s the way everybody wants it,” Mitchell said, adding he anticipates the agreement will be discussed further at the May 15 regular council meeting.
