Metal signs designating each of the 10 sports venues of the 2008 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games will be part of the local post-event legacy.
Games Coordinator Darren Hemeryk said each of the 10 4’ by 4’ metal signs features an individual sport icon.
“What we’re going to be doing is putting them up as something similar to a venue sign where, instead of saying “Dufferin Christian School - home of table tennis” we’ll have these metal icons there instead,” he explained. “We’ll leave these signs there as a permanent legacy to the venue, saying that they did host the table tennis event in the 2008 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.”
Lauren Chornomydz, decorating committee co-chair, said the idea for the signs came from the statue-like icons erected at each of the venues in Dauphin, which hosted the 2004 Manitoba Summer Games.
“My brother, Aaron Nakonechny is in a welding class and, between the two of us, we came up with this idea of doing it the way we’re doing it, as a sheet of metal with the silhouette cut out of it,” she said.
The Power Smart Manitoba Games are held every two years alternating between summer and winter events. This summer’s are being hosted by Carman, August 11-17.

The games involve more than 3,500 participants from across Manitoba who qualify at the regional level in selected competition in the 12 core sports of archery, athletics, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, golf, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, and triathlon.
Hemeryk said he anticipates the installation of the signs beginning by the end of the month.
“A lot of the work is being done on volunteer time so they’re doing it when they can,” he said. “We’re hoping to have them up potentially before some of the regional events happen.
“We’re hosting four regional events - golf, beach volleyball, triathlon and athletics - so we’d like to have them up before that. Hopefully in the next two to three weeks people will start seeing them going up around town.”
Part of the completion process includes painting the signs black and clear-coating them.
“What we’ve also done is had stainless steel Manitoba Games Carman 2008 logos created and they will go on the icons as well,” he explained. “Hopefully they’ll create a nice shadow-type effect and really stand out against the black.”
Chornomydz said she’s looking forward to seeing the completed product
“I think they’re going to look great,” she said. “The first one that’s been cut out looks fantastic.”
